A handmade Yixing teapot in the softly rounded Wendan Xishi form, shaped from Jiangponi clay and offered in both carved and uncarved versions.
Two Expressions of a Classical Form
One form.
Two very different personalities.
The Wendan Xishi Yixing Teapot combines the softly rounded character associated with Wendan and Xishi forms with the earthy presence of Jiangponi (降坡泥) clay.
At approximately 150 ml / 5.1 fl oz, it remains compact enough for Gongfu tea while offering a little more generosity than the smallest solo teapots.
Choose the Uncarved version to experience the form and clay with almost nothing added.
Or choose the Carved version, where surface decoration introduces another layer of expression.
The vessel remains the same.
What changes is how quietly—or visibly—it speaks.

The Wendan Xishi Form
Wendan Xishi — 文旦西施 brings together a particularly soft vocabulary of Yixing form.
There is fullness in the body.
Curves transition gently rather than abruptly.
The silhouette feels contained and balanced rather than angular or architectural.
Compared with the low geometry of Ziye Shipiao or the upright symmetry of Gongdeng, Wendan Xishi belongs to a softer family of forms.
Its character is revealed through proportion.
The fullness of the body.
The relationship between lid and opening.
The curve of the handle.
The way the spout extends from an otherwise rounded composition.
Without decoration, these relationships become especially clear.
Jiangponi · 降坡泥
This teapot is described as being made from Jiangponi (降坡泥), a clay term within the Yixing Zisha tradition.
Rather than simplifying the material to a generic phrase such as “brown clay,” we retain its traditional name.
For someone exploring Yixing pottery, the stated clay type is part of the identity of a teapot alongside its form, construction and capacity.
Its earthy visual character also makes Jiangponi particularly interesting in this design, especially when comparing the uncarved and carved versions.
Choose Your Version
Uncarved
The quieter expression.
Without surface carving, attention remains almost entirely on the teapot itself.
The silhouette.
The clay.
The lid.
The spout.
The handle.
Nothing interrupts the surface unnecessarily.
For someone drawn to Yixing pottery primarily for form and material, this would be our choice.
Carved
The more expressive interpretation.
The carved version introduces decoration across the clay surface, giving the same Wendan Xishi form a different visual personality.
Where the uncarved version emphasizes restraint, carving creates another point of attention.
The underlying form remains important, but the surface now becomes part of the composition.
For collectors who enjoy the relationship between Yixing pottery and decorative craftsmanship, this version offers a more expressive alternative.
Carved or Uncarved?
Neither version is inherently more beautiful.
They represent two different approaches.
Choose Uncarved if you prefer:
Pure form
Visible clay character
Minimal decoration
A quieter tea table
Choose Carved if you prefer:
Decorative detail
A more expressive surface
Greater visual individuality
A teapot that also functions as a display object
Our preference would depend on the setting.
For a very restrained Gongfu arrangement, we would choose Uncarved.
As a gift or a more visually distinctive collectible piece, Carved may have greater presence.
150 ml: A Versatile Gongfu Size
Capacity: approximately 150 ml / 5.1 fl oz
150 ml sits in a particularly useful range for Gongfu tea.
It remains considerably smaller than a conventional Western teapot, encouraging repeated infusions rather than one large brew.
Yet it provides more flexibility than a very small 80–100 ml pot.
For one person, it creates a generous session.
For two people, it divides naturally between smaller Gongfu cups.
For a small gathering using petite cups, it can still work comfortably.
A small pot—but not an exceptionally restrictive one.

Made for Quiet Tea
The uncarved version asks you to look at form.
The carved version asks you to look a little closer at the surface.
But eventually, both return to the same purpose.
Warm the pot.
Add the leaves.
Pour.
Decant.
Taste.
Then begin again.
A teapot can be collected for its clay, admired for its craftsmanship and appreciated for its form.
But it becomes most meaningful when tea becomes part of its story.
Art of Quiet Living.
Living With Yixing Clay
Before first use, rinse the teapot carefully with clean water.
After brewing, remove the leaves and rinse the interior.
Allow the pot to dry thoroughly with the lid removed before storing.
Avoid strongly scented detergents unless specifically recommended by the maker.
Protect the teapot from impacts and sudden temperature changes.
For the carved version, use a soft brush or cloth when necessary to remove dust from recessed details rather than using abrasive cleaning tools.
Curator's Note
If we were choosing this teapot purely for everyday tea, we would lean toward the Uncarved version.
There is something particularly satisfying about allowing the rounded Wendan Xishi silhouette and Jiangponi clay to stand alone.
The Carved version has a different appeal.
It introduces another layer of craftsmanship and gives the pot greater decorative presence—particularly compelling when the teapot is also intended as a gift.
Same clay.
Same form.
Two different expressions.
